Attribute
A particular item of data about a feature

Bookmark
A section of a map that you save to view later in the same session. Nobel Systems can set up permanent bookmarks for you.
Buffer
A zone at a specified distance around a feature.

Clipboard
The clipboard is a place in Windows where information that you have cut or copied is saved until you paste it into another program such as a text editor, spreadsheet, or graphics program.

Consolidated
Report that combines the data for several features

Cursor
The shape on the screen that indicates where your mouse is pointing to on a graphic screen. It is usually an arrow shape, but changes to other forms where appropriate.

Data
Specific information about a layer or feature. The contents of the fields in a database table. (See "Table"). Data can usually be exported to a spreadsheet.

Document Viewer
A tool that enables you to view the original documents used to create the maps in Geoviewer when you click the Hotlink button. You can view them through the Document Browser.

ESRI
Provider for GIS and mapping software. (www.esri.com)

Feature
A piece of information that can be displayed on the map such as a parcel number, fire hydrant, or aerial photograph. Each individual feature is represented by a row in a query table. (See "Table")

Field
Each column in a database table represents specific data (called "fields") for the particular layer. (See "Table")

gbaMS
Information technology tools for Public Works and Utility agencies

GeoCode
A geographical code to identify a particular point or area.

GIS
Geographic Information System. GIS is a combination of computer hardware, software, and data used to manipulate, analyze and present spatial information graphically. This information includes scanned maps, databases, aerial photography, etc.

Glossary
A small dictionary of words used in the Online Help, which are linked to topics where they appear.

Hotlink
If available, Hotlinks display actual documents related to features. For example, the Hotlink may be to as-built drawings, easement documents, atlas book pages, etc. Each layer can have only one Hotlink associated with it.

Identify
A tool used to see collected data about particular features on the map.

Image Map
A link from a particular area of an image. Most images of toolbars and menus in this Online Help link to the topic and show a tooltip about the link.

Layer
A group of the same type of features that you can view on a map, such as parcels, water mains or street names. The data for each layer resides in a database table, where each individual feature of the layer is represented by a row, and the data connected with the feature (i.e. house number, APN, etc.) is stored in fields (columns) in the table.

Legend
Defines the symbols currently displayed on the map.

Pan
To move the map back and forth in all directions

PDF
Portable Document Format : a file format developed by Adobe to display documents independent of the original application used to create it. PDF can be generated using XML

Pop-up
A small webpage without a top menu bar often used for advertising, but used here for certain functions. A pop-up blocker blocks the ads, but blocks these functions if the site isn't specifically allowed.

Query
Criteria for selecting features or layers on a map using the SQL language.

SCADA
Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system used  to monitor and control distributed systems from a master location.

SCALE
The map scale shows the magnification of the map, showing the relative size related to the full map. The lower the number, the more detailed and "zoomed-in". A scale of 1 is equivalent to the full size of the map.

SERVICE
A set of map data for a particular client.

SQL
Structured Query Language A standard computer language for accessing and manipulating databases. (See "Query" and "Table".)

Table
The database location for data from a single layer. Each column in the table represents specific data (called "fields") for that layer. The rows (called "records") represent individual features (instances) of items in the layer. For example, the Parcel layer contains many parcels (rows) which have a number of fields, like street, address, APN, owner, etc. Usually there is a separate layer for these as well, so you can display them separately.

Tool Tip
A little yellow box that appears when you hold the cursor over a button, which tells you what the button is for. On the main toolbars most tools are identified with text, but tooltips are very useful in tools like the Image Viewer.

XML
Extensible Markup Language, an HTML-like mark-up used to describe many different kinds of data.

Zoom
Zooming in increases magnification, zooming out decreases magnification
