Nobel Systems will utilize Helium Networking’s wireless networking protocol to manage its cloud-based data for its GeoViewer IoT parking application.
Nobel will implement Helium’s LoRaWAN with its GeoViewer Parking app, currently under development for the City of Huntington Park. Helium’s LoRaWAN connects IoT devices and transfers data to the cloud. The network is useful for connecting large numbers of sensors to the cloud cost-effectively. Devices do not need SIM cards to utilize the network, which contributes to savings.
How Does Helium LoRaWAN Work?
LoRaWAN utilizes two significant components: a gateway and IoT sensors. Large numbers of IoT sensors send data packets to a central gateway using a dedicated LoraWAN Radiofrequency (RF) band. Only the gateway uses a cellular SIM card or WiFi to transfer data packets via sensors to the cloud. The wireless network has a dedicated frequency band throughout the world, connected at a minimal cost.
How Nobel’s GeoViewer Parking Application Works with Helium
Helium’s dedicated APIs store and pull data from the cloud. Nobel Systems’ Geoviewer IoT parking app uses these APIs to monitor new data received by the gateway from installed IoT parking sensors. The GeoViewer IoT parking app monitors for vacant or occupied parking spots using sensors installed below the parking spaces. As soon as a new data point is received for any parking spot, the API immediately updates it on the GeoViewer Parking app.
A user can reserve a vacant spot using the payment system provided on GeoViewer Parking and entering the car’s license plate number in the app. The parking sensors are sensitive enough to detect if a spot is vacant or occupied within seconds and transfers the information to the gateway. The gateway then transmits the information to the cloud, where GeoViewer detects this new data. The Helium LoraWAN wireless network powers the entire network.
The Benefits of Using Helium Networking with GeoViewer
Using Helium’s LoraWAN with the GeoViewer IoT parking app provides a complete cloud-managed database cost-effective because the individual sensors do not require SIM cards or ethernet connection. Out of 1,490 sensors for the GeoViewer Parking application, only 18 SIM cards are necessary for the gateways.
LoraWAN helps increase the scale of application—up to 700 sensors can be connected to each gateway. The latency for communication between the GeoViewer app and gateways is reduced drastically due to LoraWAN. Similar parking apps require more infrastructure, such as dedicated RF network antennas and wiring, to deploy such large applications.
Helium Networking also provides an extended wireless networking range beyond other wireless service providers. A typical mesh network provides a range of around two miles instead of Helium’s LoRaWAN, which offers a ten-mile range.
