University and High School Students in the Philippines Learn About GIS and Geography

Nobel Systems Inc, of San Bernardino, California in partnership with Bayawan Water District hosted a GIS Day celebration at Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) and Bayawan National High School in Bayawan City,  in the Philippines. Nobel also sponsored a similar event at the New Ormoc National High School in the City of Ormoc, the Philippines on Nov 14.

GIS Day celebrates and educates the importance of geographic information systems and intelligence in everyday life.

Key presenter Dona Tajora from Nobel Systems and representatives at Bayawan Water gave presentations explaining GIS and how it is used in everyday life and in business to students at NORSU and also at Bayawan National High School.

Alma Abrasaldo, General Manager of Bayawan Water District, launched activities with an opening speech.

Explaining GIS

A morning session took place at NORSU where approximately sixty Information and Communication Technology (ICT) students actively participated.

The afternoon session took place at Bayawan National High School where thirty chosen senior high students actively participated.

Each session was divided into four parts: Audio Visual presentations about GIS and GIS Day; an hour talk by a key-speaker from Nobel Systems presenting GIS, its importance and how it is being used in everyday life; a game involving printed map: and an Interactive Session on how to use the GeoViewer application by Nobel Systems.

A GIS, or geographic information system, is a computerized system that gathers, stores and analyzes data related to global positions. By connecting data that appears to be unrelated, it offers governments, businesses, and citizens to better understand spatial relationships and patterns.

GIS can be used in many applications, including exploring demographic information, mapping and monitoring utility infrastructure, and tracking the effects of natural disasters such as hurricanes and volcano eruptions and lava flows.

GIS Day at Ormoc National Schools

School Division Superintendent Manuel P. Albaño gave a welcome message at the New Ormoc City National High School on GIS Day. A message from Ormoc City Mayor Hon. Richard I. Gomez was also read. Mathematics professor Marjune Nepaya was the Emcee for the event.

Gella Romero, Nobel Systems Senior Business Development Executive, gave an overview of what the students would learn on GIS Day.

June Reyes, Nobel Systems Project Manager, explained to Ormoc High School student the capabilities of GIS. The students practiced locating landmarks on paper maps and then practiced capturing data on Nobel Systems GeoViewer on an iPad.

The favorite part of the event for students was when they went outside to practice capturing data in the field with GeoViewer.
